Vegetation Canopy Lidar (VCL)
This satellite was designed to measure the vegetation density on earth. Lasers from the satellite bounce off of the vegetation and the ground and are collected back at the satellite. Onboard instrument software determines the vegetation density and returns this information back to earth for further study. The image below from NASA depicts the laser return of a tree.
